Hey guys! I’m new here and am an amateur fish keeper. Everyday is a day for learning and I’ve had some great help, but now I come to you all for help.

While doing water change and gravel hoover/vacuum, I found this little thing hiding in the gravel. Can anyone shine a light on what it is and if I should be worried about my fish/snails/shrimp. Many many thanks in advance

Hello. It doesn't look familiar to me, however you may have things living on your side of the pond that don't live here in the US. I can tell you that large, regular water changes will keep whatever you have living in your tank healthy and resistant to pathogens that my be living in the tank. But, most of those will live only in less than clean water conditions. Vacuuming the bottom material during the water change will also remove anything that could be harmful to your tank inhabitants.

I'm not sure what that is but I'd check out any information you have over there for Caddis Flies. There are many varieties of that fly but the pics I could find of land caddis flies has a shape very similar to your bug.
Hope this helps. (y)

Thank you ☺️ we do regularly do around 20% water changes as we were advised that anything more could disrupt the tanks balance. So I like to think my tank is clean. The water is almost always clear, we use an air stone and our filter has carbon and I believe the term is ceramic media?? They look like stone donuts 😅 if there’s anything more I could do, I would be grateful for the advice!

I’ve had a look on google and will keep an eye on my tank. Last thing I want is anything trying to harm the little guys! Thank you for your help! ☺️

Hello again. Keep in mind that such a small water change leaves most of the toxins in the water. Those will increase between water changes and will definitely affect the health of your tank. A gradual increase in the amount of water you change will strengthen the immune system of your tank pets. I've removed and replaced half or more of the tank water every few days for many years and my fish live for several years past their normal life span.
