Hello my knowledgable friends,

I am interested in creating a refugium to help combat the microalgae. I was considering using a small fishtank set next to my 55g. My silly question would be, "how do I control the flow of water in and out of the refugium?"

You would have to have some sort of overflow and a return pump. Possibly able to be done by a syphon. HOB overflow would also work to transfer water over the top of the display and into the refugium.

No, i don't run a sump. I have 2 backfilters and a hang-on skimmer. My biggest fear is that I will wake up to a flodded room and an empty tank.

Look into overflows, a return pump rate much lower than your overflow, and an float switch to auto-shut-off your return pump should the overflow become clogged for any reason.
