hello all,
i recently purchused a 29 gal tank and stand and decided to put sand instead of gravel, but my problem lies in the snad i chosed, which was premium playsand from HD, anyone have any advice on keeping a sand tank thingy?

well was the sand i got, have any chemicals? i mean i read on a thread that this sand was safe for fish, that and is there any fish i cant use? just anything people ran into, like potential problems stuff like that! :fadein:

It's hard to say unless I actually go to Home Depot and check out their play sand. As long as it says that it is Chemical free, then you will be fine. I've never used it so can't comment on what exactly it should say.

You can use any fish you want with sand, granted that the sand is rounded. There are some fish, like Cory's and eels that need a smoother grain. But again, I've never used play sand so I can't comment on if it is smooth or not.

well i think its pretty smooth becuse it is for kinds and it shouldent be rough, so hopefully:)

a couple of pointers and comments about sand, the sand may take a while to settle and if its white sand little fish poop will be very noticeable...so maybe if you get a dark colored sand to mix so it isnt as obvious...or load up on plants and decor to help hide it but sand is always great and looks very natural.....good luck and keep up with us! :D

well it did take a long time to settle.... but if there is still a little bit of sand in the water columbs will the fish be able to allow it to flow through there gills?

i dont know about that, i think i might do the cycle regular, :ninja: :gangsta: itas 16 bucks for it at my lfs

with fish i meant :), yeah i felt the sand by the grain and it is like neutral, its not hard but its not soft? *scratches head* cool and i have yet to check the bag to see if it is chemical free, and if it is can i boil it to be safe?

ok i have the bag and it says its "screened, washed, and dried. should i be worried since its washed? probably with soap? so that why i bring in that because thats how i useally get chemicals off stuff is to boil it :)
