I see allot of aquarium salt dosages measured in heaping tablespoons per 5 gallons of water, or teaspoons per gallon or variations thereof. My question is what percentage of salt do all these mean? Being that salt is removed with each water change it is hard to keep track of it all. My "Pond Care" brand salt level test kit tells me I am at .12% of salt. This is what I got after 25 level tablespoons of salt was added to a 75 gal tank. Can anyone tell me what percentage a low, medium or heavy dose is?
BTW, I'm using it to help heal an abrasion on a gourami snout. Only a couple snails, but no other fish that are really sensitive to salt. All other parameters are in normal ranges for my setup.

The therapeutic salt percentage is between 0.3% and 0.6%. I'm not sure about when using percentages but when testing with a hydrometer, the temperature can effect the reading. For example: If a hydrometer read 1.022 at 78 degrees, that reading would be higher in 75 degree water and lower in 82 degree water. To the fish tho, the salt level would feel the same as the 78 degrees.
Hope this helps. (y)

Wow, that is exactly what I needed. I will put that in my permanent notes. Thanks again Andy. You are always great help. My fish, and I thank you! :fish1:

They sell things as Andy has said to measure the salinity. I wouldn't think it matters, salt simply stimulates the slime coat production during times of stress or disease. I just drop in a handful of marine salt here and there for my guppies and do lots of water changes.
