anybody know of a screw in pc that has a color temp around 6500k that is sold for home use? i've heared of one that's around 19 watts, but i have no idea on the brand name. i'd like one of these over my five gallon. my ten watt pc just crapped out on me, and 2 wpg didn't seem to do the trick for anything besides anacharis.

I have heard of many people using the Lights of America lights, I think you can get them at walmart, but I am unsure what color temp they are.

According to a post by a member on nano-reef.com that I read, Lights of America has two different bulbs...one at 5500k and one at 6500k. I don't know it all their bulbs conform to one of these temps or not. Might run a search and see if they have a website? Post again if you don't find anything and I'll PM the guy who posted on the other site and ask for more info.

according to their website, loa uses 6500k for outdoor applicatioins and a 4xxxk for their indoor applications.

I went to the Lights of America site and learned that all their indoor bulbs are 2800k. Their outdoor Fluorex fixtures use a 6500k bulb. These are available as a U shaped bulb or a quad. I didn't see a self ballasted screw in listed with the 6500k temp. I have sent an email to them about this and am awaiting the reply. Will update as soon as I hear from them.

screw in PC

Although I haven't heard anything back from Lights of America yet, I did find a site that has self ballasted screw in PC's at 5100k. This may not be the ideal temp for plants, but it's close to daylight and would work better than the "warm white" temp that is used in most of these bulbs. Here is the link.

For smaller bulbs...in the 9-14 watt range

I have found the bulb. You get it at Home Depot. The brand is Commercial Electric and the part # is 772-429. It is a self ballasted screw in PC rated @ 19 w. Claims to be equal to a 75w incandescent. I have to take issue with them on this. This thing is WAY brighter than any 75w incand bulb I have ever seen. It hurts my eyes to look at it...makes me see spots! It is 6500k and is called a "daylight". The light is a blazing blue/white. I also, although they have not replied to my email yet, bought a Lights of America Fluorex fixture. It is the largest one they had at about 6"x10". It is a sealed outdoor fixture and has a 65w 6500k PC bulb. I used it on the upstairs porch to replace a couple of old incand floodlights. This thing is like having a piece of the sun in your yard. It lights up the whole side yard about 40' wide and 60' out. It only cost about $30.00 too. This thing would be great to light a nano tank as long as you had a tall canopy or as a hanging pendant over an open tank. I don't really know, without doing some experimentation, how well these fixtures would adapt to aquarium usage. Just have to try it out. The bulb mentioned above would allow you to have a nice small planted tank with one of the cheap incand strips though. Or it would be great to light a refuge.

unfortunately, my home depot does not carry such bulbs. anybody know if they would order them in for me?

Lights

Do you have a Wal-Mart? They also carry the Light of America Work Light and it is the same thing as the light that LoganJ is talking about except for the casing....Just a thought

the loa worklight was pulled from the shelves of many wal-marts b/c of people using it to grow things other than aquarium plants...

they do carry the other loa fixture (the 65 watter), but that's not what i'm looking for...

i just want a higher wattage bulb to screw into the hood of my 5 gallon. after exhausting every every hardware store in town, i found nothing. i guess i'll just pay the 9 bucks for the all glass brand 10 watt mini pc...
