I have a Royal Pleco in with an Oscar I've been treating for HITH with Fishzole. Water parameters are fine and the Royal has been doing fine for the three weeks that I've had him. He's been munching on the driftwood that is in the tank eveytime I see him. I noticed that today he is lathargic and his eyes are sunken in and he is laying on his side at the bottom of the tank.

Welcome to AquariumAdvice JD8 :)

Sunken areas around the eyes are usually a sign of starvation in plecs. What have you been feeding him and how much?

I doubt its the Fishzole, which is an antibiotic; for the most part they don't seem to affect scaleless fish. At least I couldn't find any proof of that; someone else may have more info that I.

Thank you.

He died late last night.

Here's what I'm thinking.... most organisms that metabolize wood of some sort rely on bacteria to provide the enzyme to help breakdown the single-chain monomers in their stomach. I was wondering if the antibiotic knocked out the bacteria and he starved to death. Just a hunch. Thing is.. there was plenty of bogwood, cucumber, spirulina tabs, etc available. I know bogwood is essential to their diet but how essential?

Aw I'm sorry JD8; that sucks :(

Interesting theory and not one I have ever even thought about before; you might want to throw a post on www.plantetcatfish.com (the internet catfish gurus). I'm sure they'll know MUCH better then I if thats a valid theory LOL

Its also a possibility, especially since he had food available (and was eating I assume) that there was a parasite issue, especially if it was wild caught. I'm not sure how effective Fish Zole is on all parasites (I think its used for some).

with any antibiotic, they won't kill off ALL bacteria.

It's why there are so many varieties out there, specific kinds for specific bugs.

It'd seem like if the product claimed it was safe for scaleless fish, that would include safe for the symbiotic digestive bacteria...but who knows.

sorry about your fishy :(
