i put tin foil under the light and cut a few various sizes and shapes into the tin foil and that seems too work really well, iv heard of rapping a dark tape around the florecent tube kina like a candy cane fasion, has any ever tryed this?

hmm - I don't think dimming a tank's light is very popular, most of us are out to increase our light output!

I'd also think putting just about anything on the bulb itself will causing overheating, and will shorten the life of the bulb.

how about using a piece of tinted glass between the light and the tank.

or some regular glass, and painting it white, or using some of that cheap car-window tint.

i used the tinfoil method for a few fish, like my e-cat and piranhas and some cichlids that dont like the bright lights, i yeah not too many peopel think of decreaseing the light in there tank for nocternal or timid spieces of fish, they juts think about having lots of light too see the fish and a bright lights too see the colors of there fish better.

the painting of of glass is a good idea but i cant think of any paint that i want in contact with my aquariums.

I just place papers, cards, etc. under the light. I have a beige peice of paper that gives the aquarium an orange tint look at night, and black paper with a TEENY hole in it to show only the silhouettes of the fish. I have light colored rocks in gravel so it really makes a different because the rocks reflect the light.
