Well, I've spent all summer working on setting up a 70g piranha tank. It's cycled, planted, and stocked with a pleco and a breeding population of these neat looking cobra guppies (the dark red background really highlights their green tails)

Anyways, now that there is a peaceful community living in my tank, I don't know if I can bear to throw in a bunch of piranha. In case I decide not to, can anyone recommend some interesting, generally peaceful, and relatively inexpensive fish I could stock it with instead? I'm thinking about maybe a ropefish or violet goby (they're so ugly :p ) but I the LFS doesn't have any, and I don't wanna order online.

Any ideas?

Bala Sharks, Ooo.. Crabs would be cool.

Ooh.. Rope fish, yeah!

How about crabs? Blue Lobsters?

Oh oh oh oh oh!

Wait, thats what I want..

Clown Loach
Tiger Barbs
Lime tetras they're bright green! Get the ones with red eyes.
Zebra Danios are really cheap and active. They chase each other alot.
Red tail sharks!
Rope fish are good but you do need to seal the top of the tank.
Crabs are ok but if you have alot of decor they will hide ALOT.
Blue lobsters are really cool looking but eat what they catch usually at night.

cichlids would be cool but the guppys would be lunch after a few months with
larger ones like dempseys or oscars.
Severums are pretty cool large mostly peace full.

I have a blue lobster and he is so cool. He is in a tank with tigar barbs, an eel, and buenes aires tetras. He doesn't do anything to the fish. I was told to watch out cause when the eel gets big enough he'll think nothing of having the blue lobster for dinner.

I like khuli loaches, and I know these are for brackish water but I like the bumble bee something fish.. they are tiny.

I second a few bala sharks.

If you wanted my recommendation or IMO i would stay away from Paranha, It is a fish that will reach 12" in size and is very agressive. with a 70g tank there is so much you can do with it. most of the fishes listed in the other posts are excellant choices and not one of them said how cool it would be with Paranha.
If you like the look of the Paranha go for something like a silver dollor which is call a vegitarian paranha and very peaceful.

IF you buy clown loaches when small they aren't too pricey. And then they grow to 8-10 inches in size and are super colourful and fun to watch. Plus they munch down on snails like crazy.

Perhaps some cheap discus would be a good choice also. Some can be super expensive (300$ or more) but there are always some cheaper varieties as well.

Ropefish is a carnivore, though. Don't kid yourself on that one. The guppies will be gone tout suite. And you'll need a larger aquarium eventually. They get to 1 meter (3+ feet).

Why not try a school of Boesmani Rainbows?
Or... a Black Ghost Knife fish!!
Or... Darn. Gotta go to class. I'm sure others will have ideas.

Don't go for Pacus, btw. They get even bigger then piranhas.

Violet Gobies are BW that require a specific gravity of almost marine. They would not be a good community fish as they are almost blind and extremely sluggish. They are also extremely prone to disease and infection and FW and don't do well in it at all.
