As i have posted before, im trying to do a cycle on a new tank with a crayfish in it

Ammonia was up about a week ago and i had no nitrite. now ammonia seems to be down and nitrite is up which I've been told is a part of cycling

My question is, should I still do water changes with these levels? My hubby and my son are saying the ammonia is yellow, I keep asking them because I swear I'm color blind 🤣

Adding in prime and stability with water changes

Nitrite is toxic to fish, and you need to change water in the presence of nitrite in the same way you need to change water in the presence of ammonia.

I'd say your ammonia is at 0.25ppm and nitrite is 0.5ppm which is precisely one of the examples given in my post.

And the levels have been consistently this color for the last few days
That's because "fish in" cycling takes a long time to complete. You are doing water changes to keep the accumulating nitrites from getting too high and too toxic. As I showed you here:, Struggling with ammonia new tank in post #6, the nitrite portion of the cycling process takes longer to complete than the ammonia portion. It's just by chance most likely that you are getting similar readings daily. Change a larger volume of water and you should get a lower reading. (y)
