I tested my tank for nitrates this morning and the reading was between a low range of 2.5 and a high range of 12.5. Then I realized I have no idea what that means. Is that good or bad? Can someon explain why the test is read that way?
Why the test is read that way, I can't particularily explain ;p What a reading of that nature means though.. is you're perfectly fine on nitrates for the moment. Most people change around 20-40, and I've heard from several experienced people that it doesn't matter at all unless you're acclimating new fish.
The general rule of thumb is to keep nitrates below 40ppm. That's what I've gathered anyways, from various threads here. If you do regular water changes its very unlikely you'll ever have a problem
