UV sterilizers are a useful tool to help keep floating algae under control, free swimming parasites under control and any free swimming bacteria under control. Are they absolutely necessary? No. Are they very useful? Yes. Good husbandry helps keep the need for a UV at a minimum. That said, if you are constantly having green water or parasitic cases like Ick or Velvet or Flukes, etc., a UV can help eliminate them.
Hope this helps. (y)

I run a UV filter on one of my aquariums. Without it that aquarium suffers from a bacterial bloom i dont seem to be able to get on top of. UV keeps it away.

I used to run a standalone UV in the aquarium, which worked great at a very good price.

I now run a Fluval UVC Inline Clarifier connected onto the return hose from a 407 filter, thats not as good as my old UV. Its lower Wattage, so less powerful and the contact time is much less due to the flow rate through the filtration compared to the flow rate through my old standalone UV. So I have to run it 24/7 (the standalone ran for 6 hours/ day). But being lower Wattage its more energy efficient. And it doesn't take up any space in the aquarium.

Aiken thanks for posting this I was looking into a UV light back in 2024 but did not know of one that would work with the 407s ribbed hoses I am really glad I saw this.
Thanks Airborne 82nd.

Another downside is that you cant replace the lamp when it expires, so you have to replace the whole unit. The life of the lamp is 30000 hours, so about 3.5 years running 24/7. I've had mine maybe a year, so see how long it lasts
