I set up a 46 gal pentagon tank a couple of months ago. I purchased an amazon sword and an aluminum plant. The amazon sword is doing fine and the aluminum plant died in about 2 days. My lfs sold me the aluminum plant and I didn't realize it really was not a good plant to put in an aquarium. I want to buy 2 more plants. I would like something that would grow tall since the tank is a very high tank. I put liquid plant gro in the tank. It adds iron to the water to help plants grow. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks :!:

Not sure what they're called in you neck of the woods. But what I've been having success with is Corkscrew Vale or something like that. It grows really well moderate light and doesn't require much care.

Hi Jim, I'm on Long Island too. There are also a few species of annubias that get very tall and they don't much light to survive.

If you want something tall that grows like a weed under moderate light conditions I'll immediately recommend Aponogeton ulvaceus. I picked one up about a month ago for my 26 gallon tank. When I bought it there were about 6 leaves, each about 5-6 inches long. It was growing in a very poorly lighted tank. In my tank with about 2 watts per gallon, no special fertilizers, and no additional CO2 the A. ulvaceus has gone crazy! It now has about 15 leaves, each between 16-20 inches long, and is flowering.

A warning though...this plant is one of those commonly referred to as a 'tank buster' because it can get REALLY big! I've already had to prune back a few leaves to prevent my other plants from being shaded out.

I keep some nice grass plants in my parents tanks. They grow fairly fast under moderate light and when they reach the surface the just spill over the top, until you trim them back. Very nice.

And yes, an aluminum plant is a house plant, not an aquarium plant. That one seems to happen a lot.
