Hi all,

I previously used my 2 gallon hex tank to raise my platy babies. But I dumped them all into my 10 gal. I've own nothing but platy since I started in October, and now wanting something different. I've thought of ghost shrimps, neon tetras, dwarf gouramis, but these kinds of fish need to live in the 10 gal, which is always overstocked. I'm currently waiting for the babies to reach 1 inch so the LFS will take them.

So now I'm looking for some type of fish that will occupy and be happy with a 2 gal hex tank. I kinda have my eyes on those tiny crabs (fiddler crabs maybe?). Do you guys and girls think it's appropriate to have a couple of them in my 2 gal? If not, can you suggest some other type of fish?

Thank you in advance.

Crabs need a way to climb out of the water and have some land space, so a 2g tank would really limit you in setting up a nice area for them.

What about aquatic frogs? If you stick with the dwarf variety they might work in there. You could also get one of those fearsome blue lobster/crayfish things that so many try to keep in a community tank (myself included) and have to take back beause it eats fish. You could cull your platy babies and put them in there with it, if you are not squeamish.

Also, I feel compelled to recommend a betta as another logical choice.

Good luck!

I had a fiddler crab in a 2 gallon hex tank many years ago. I bought a little platform on a stick, and then had another stick in the tank for a while, stupidly which went to the top of the tank. Came home that night, and it was dead on the kitchen floor. It had crawled out of the tank, down off the clothes dresser the tank was on, out of my bedroom, down the hall, down the flight of stairs, and made it all the way to the kitchen! So...if you can find a nice setup like that for the crab, I don't see why you couldn't do things that way, but you wouldn't be able to have fish (I don't think) and make sure the tank is covered

Also, as TG said, perhaps you can go with a dwarf african frog, a pair of ghost shrimp, and a betta...that would look nice.

Yes I guess it'll be too small for the crabs, but I thought crayfish need even more space? How big do they get anyway? What if I have a sudden craving for lobster? 8O

The frog sounds interesting. I found an excellent article here

I'll see if our LFS has some good ones.
Thank you for the inputs.

I was leaning towards a betta with some ghost shrimp (you need some hiding places for the shrimp just in case the betta gets hungry)

But those crabs are pretty neat, too so if its possible to house it then I say go for the crab!

Do you think the betta will eat my platy babies / fry? If so, I might get one in the 10g to help control the baby boomers population 8)

Went to Petland yesterday to see how the dwarf frogs look like. They're cute to me, but my bf think they're gross :p
