Please forgive my cghemistry. Iodine is an element on the periodic table. In nature it can be seen as I- That means it would like to have another ion to be stable. The same way O and H would rather be OH2. I think Iodide is the form that it usually takes. Chemistry class was a looong time ago, so please forgive the inaccuracies. If you look at the periodic table it may help. http://www.webelements.com/

Iodide is the ion and when two join together you get Iodine, I2.
