Tomorrow im going in for a job interview type thing for Petsmart. I would really like this job so maybe I can make a small difference when it comes to fish. Has anyone tried to work at Petsmart? Is there anything I can expect. I know some people have problems with Petsmart, but this one is REALLY exceptional (from what I can tell as a customer). I have teaching in my blood and I would love to help all those pet owners out there.

If I do get this job... i promise to use everything I have learned from this forum for good (as opposed to evil?). The bettas will be taken care of! The guppies won't be used to cycle tanks!! The goldies will have adequate tank room!! .. and the list goes on...

Wish me luck!

You have no idea how frustrating working at a fish store can be. You'll have to explain the cycle to EVERY person who is new to fish. It gets tiring.

Some people are SO ignorant! They dont listen to your advice and proceed to murder fish :(

Since the petsmart I work at sells zebra danios for 50 cents, I tell them to get 2 danios per 10g and leave them in there for a month or two until their tank is "established". Then I tell them they can return their danios if they want and buy some new fish.

The most frustrating part of the job for me was netting small loaches. I cringe every time someone wants to buy a loach. Especially skunk loaches, The jump out of one tank and into the next. Once I chased a skunk through four tanks until I got another employee to help.

as far as repitition goes- I plan on being a High School Biology teacher.. so i better get used to saying the same thing at least 10 times a day =o)
That, and I tell the same stories all the time to anyone who wants to listen... so that should be noooooo problem hehe

Catching a fish on the other hand.. I might need a little practice... I can't catch my platys for the life of me! I will do muh best

Also, do the people at the store give you a good "shpeel" to tell customers about cycling? and what to do if people refuse to cycle (i.e. give them zebra danios and return em) and things like that? Or am I on my own?

Haha, im talking like I actually have the job. Im just so excited

If I owned a store and the customer refused to cycle their tank before adding fish, I would simply refuse to sell them the fish.

And the people at the store didn't say anything about telling customers to cycle. They just want to sell fish. I tell them to cycle for the sake of the fish :(

See, I was thinking "refuse to sell em fish if they don't cycle" but I want to keep my job... but I will do my best to get them to cycle *nod*

Best wishes. It may be tiring to repeat yourself as some have mentioned, BUT for every 5 doorknobs you talk to, you'll find that one customer like me, who really is interested in what you say, and I'll come back and look specifically for YOU next time around.

Sometime's an informed employee has a more profound effect on a lay customer than you would believe. My Petsmart girl knows me by name now

out of the MASSIVE sign up list for the seminar only 4 people showed up. The manager was REALLY nice and i think it went very well. I said I could start on Monday.. so im just waiting for that call back =o)

I better get the job.. i took out my lip ring and everything!

I put in a clear ball for my tongue, took out my lip ring and I really hope they don't make me take out my conch piercing (its in my ear). They said they allow one set of earrings.. but im in a college town thats full of pierced kids so maybe they will over look that one..
