I've been searching and reading about sexing these guys and I feel like I might have two males and one female from what I've read. I don't feel confident in my skills at all. Anyone want to take a stab at the genders for me? P.S. I just picked them up yesterday and they had no color at the pet store and not much for cover in the tank.

Hmm. No one yet? I took a few more pics today.ImageUploadedByAquarium Advice1417535836.342079.jpgImageUploadedByAquarium Advice1417535853.379038.jpgImageUploadedByAquarium Advice1417535888.097585.jpg
The third pic stays kind of drab and the first pic fish seems to nip at #3. Both #1 & #3 get along with #2 just fine. They are in a 29 gallon planted aquarium. ImageUploadedByAquarium Advice1417536065.762553.jpg

Yah.. I'm going to say definitely 2 males, one possible female. The appear to be wild caught as well..

Well that's not good! So much for trusting the pet store to sex them!
I have no I interest in breeding them, just for display. I imagine keeping the three males together would not be good then? What would you suggest I do to make them happy?

Thanks for the replies!!!

2 males for sure other hard to tell. If they end up being all males you should be ok. You will have problems if you introduce a female. I have the opposite, bought 4 thinking I could end up with at least one male and one female, ended up with 4 females.

Mind pointing out which is the questionable female? I'm heading to the pet store to check out the rest of the group they had and see if they are all males or if there are any obvious females. Thanks for the help!

So in the last pic the top one would be female I'm guessing and the bottom one and your middle pic would be male?! I'm totally guessing only because the top has rounded fins and the bottom has the "jewels" on the black spot although I've been reading that's not entirely accurate as well. "Get fish" I said. "They'll be relaxing" I said. LOL not at the moment!

Brookster123 this is the one you were 45% sure is female. Got some closer pics. Does this help the percentage go up or down? ImageUploadedByAquarium Advice1417554138.995283.jpgImageUploadedByAquarium Advice1417554151.025379.jpg

Top and bottom actually, the top was always more noticeable. . The wc variety can be tough to sex.. I couldn't sex that bottom girl for the first month.. her colors took a while to develope.. you could just wait it out and see what happens.. chances are if there were a female present with 2 males you'd have bickering and chasing..

Well. With this one ImageUploadedByAquarium Advice1417555625.319434.jpg in the front (she/he's the one you thought might be a girl) this one and the brightest one hang out together non stop. Then "odd one out" as I've been calling it hangs out sometimes but gets chased away by the brightest one sometimes. So I'm thinking this one must be male? None have pink bellies so they really could be all male and two are just chummy? These are mg first cichlids so unsure of their normal behavior.

CoronaBlue your fish are very beautiful. Especially your hammy rainbow! :)

Thanks. The rainbows are very social when I get close. I've been wanting to add a few more but they are hard to find around my area.

There was about 10 of them at the same pet store here. Figures right? Does yours special order for you?

They can but I like to see them before I buy. I've run across some bad stock where they lack color. I frequent my stores weekly so I'll find more eventually. My females are really pretty. In the mornings they turn green/black when the males are showing off.
