IME gravel hazes less if you use a gravel vac and had rinsed it thoroughly. Sand was a pain for me and I had an issue with it stirring up and wrecking my filters. But a lot of people use it. There is no getting around rinsing any substrate though. Sand requires more if anything. Hope that helps.

Reason I say is because I have a 30 gallon with sand that required no pre rinsing, just added and put water in
