Shell dwelling cichlids

I set up a 20 gallon long tank with sand and shells. Currently cycling the tank. I am looking to get some shell dwelling cichlids. The smaller species. How many could go into a tank with a bottom dimension of 12 inches by 30 inches? Any good cichlids species for the top of this tank too?

If you're talking multifasciatus (Multies), I'd say 8 or so adults with multiple groupings of shells in a species only tank. There really is no "dither" that will work as far as size and water parameters I'm afraid.

I've kept guppies and endlers in my multi tank with no issue but some have reported that their guppies have gotten torn up in short order.
