Small Ciclids?

I am new to aquaria and have a 36gal. I was thinking about adding small african cichlids (3"ish) if such a beast exists. I figure smaller equals more fish. Any recommendations? Thanks

You could go with south/central Americans. If you decide to some good fish to look at would be rainbow cichlid (Herotilapia multispinosa ) any type of ram, convicts, firemouths, assorted catfish, plecos, depending on breed of cichlid giant danios.
