I am currently in working on stocking a 75gallon I started with 2 fire mouth cichlids roughly about 1 1/2 inches in length and was looking at a Pike cichlid. I don't have much knowledge of them any ideas and if that would be a good mix?? I thanks

There are many pike cichlids that would work in a 75g and loads more that are to large, but they have a very high conspecific aggression issues but should be fine your meeki. Crenicichla notophthalmus or Crenicichla regani would be a good place to start looking.

I guess I'll have to do some digging at the store, listed only as Pike cichlid no specifics I guess that would be important

Haha yea that would be no good. Thanks for the heads up, might have avoided a disaster down the road but I wanted to hit the forums before, I guess my next question would be what would be a few recommended Pike species for that size tank?

My pike cichlid was mean. Bullied cichlids 4 times his size. Lost a peacock eel in my tank for a year. One day I come down and check on my tank. There is my eel. Half of it hanging out of the pike cichlids mouth. Grrr.

Smallest fish in the tank and did the most damage. I wouldn't want one again.

Yes, that's the crenicichla sp belly crawler. Most of the pikes from reticulata group (like belly crawler) have that broad snaky head, which I personally don't care for.

There are well over 100 pike species and about 75% of them will typically work in a 75 gallon. Just avoid the lugubris group pikes and avoid multiple pikes per tank as mentioned above.

It's not uncommon for pikes not to be labeled, so you always have to do your homework. Luckily, there are many telltale signs which will narrow the species.

My personal recommendation is the saxitilis, regani, sveni or lepidota.
