I have a 12 gallon nano planning on a few fish and some soft corals, maybe a few hard coral....how long do I leave the lights on per day. I have heard different opinons

How much lighting do you have?
I'd recommend starting small, 6-8 hours. You can then slowly increase to 10 or so hours per day if you don't start to encounter algae issues.

I run my bio 8 from 7:30 am acitinic 8:30 am 10000k till 2pm 10000k acitinic 3pm moons 3 till 5 pm this is mainly due to me needing a dark room 
My 10 from 11 acitinic noon 10000k till 7p 10000k 8 p acitinic moons 7/24/365 I have had them on these times for over 2 years ,and (no issues on growth of softies , lps ) honestly I am looking to cut back a bit on each of them for less light ...
