Adding sand?

Added some new sand to existing 3 yr old sandbed.. Getting a pretty bad diatom dusting..
Guess this is to be expected?? Thanks

How big is your tank ?
How much sand did you add ?
The diatoms will die off , it's a algae that feeds off of the silicate ,
Ideally to add more sand should only be done in small quantities over a period of time ,
1-2 cups a week

Yea thanks it a 75 gal w/30 gal sump. Just added about 3 cups-1/2" to one side of the tank, but guessing it has blown some and diatoms are around on top...
