Last night I saw two of my Bangai Cardinals doing a mating dance! I'm super excited about this -- I managed to get some still pictures but by the time I got the video out and running, they had stopped the cool stuff. Here are the pictures:

The male accepted food last night (a lot of food), so I'm guessing the female hasn't laid eggs yet, but I'm assuming it will happen sooner or later so I wanted to be prepared. I had a couple of things I wanted to run by everyone here, maybe somebody has some experience breeding these fish and has some pointers.

The male has turned a different color, a little green-ish. I think this is good because I can identify him a lot easier now. I'm assuming this is normal?

From my Googling, there isn't much intervention I can do except the following: monitor when the male stops eating and watch for the eggs in his mouth to hatch in about two weeks. If I can capture the male into a breeding net during this time that's probably good. I've also read that if I can somehow capture the male in the breeding net while the fry are outside of his mouth, I should put him back in the display tank and keep the fry along in the breeding net. Is there any truth to this, or anything I'm missing?

Does anyone know realistically how likely it is that any fry will actually hatch and make it? I've heard it's not too difficult to do this from some places, but this is all new to me.

Any other recommendations out there? I'll certainly be posting pictures and/or videos as I get them throughout this process :)

Congrats! I know nothing about fish breeding. I did a lot of research on seahorse breeding though. My only suggestion is to buy a sponge filter drop it in your tank, and start it cycling and building up beneficial bacteria. From what i hear, they make your fry tank much easier to deal with instead of having chunks of LR in there. JM .02

There's about 250 pounds of LR in the tank, so I don't even know if I'll be able to catch anything at all, but I have a couple of bags of BioMax from AC filters that have been seeding for several months now for use in quarantine tanks. So it seems like you believe it's a good idea to keep the fry in a separate tank as opposed to a breeder net in the display tank? I have a sump/refugium as well, but I don't know if it's a good idea to put fry in there either...

I would just get like a 10-20 gallon separate tank. The net will be fine for awhile but they are going to need room to grow out. You could plumb it into your main system though for ease if you are confident in your DTs levels.

All right, this may make things easier than using a breeder net when/if that time comes -- I have everything set up for a quarantine tank, so assuming I can catch the male out of the display tank that should be good to go.

Sounds good, I would do a PWC when you do it, and just put him in the QT with your PWC water, then you can slowly adjust the QT tanks water to better levels. Depending on your DTs levels. Should reduce shock and stress on the male.

Something interesting, I don't know what to make of it:

The other night I saw the male cardinal and that huge bulging mouth wasn't there. He still isn't eating, and their behavior is the same (female very protective of the male, male very shy and reserved), but I don't know if he still has the eggs in there. Is this type of thing typical or have I probably lost the eggs?
