Hey all,

Was doing some tank maintenence and noticed that my heater (in my refugium) has a hard white "calcified" substance around it. Wondering A: what is this (salt I'm assuming) and B: is this ok?

Thanks for your insight

Personally, I change my heaters out every year, so I don't really get any build up on them. Once the new ones go in, the old ones get rotated into the saltwater mixing container.

Calcium carbonate deposits. The heat from the heater accelerates its formation. If you want to clean it, a vinegar soak & stiff brush should do it. I don't think it's harmful but it might make your heater less efficient.

@qube: good idea. I need another mixing heater anyway.

@mike: I figured as much. Noticed my DT temp is a degree higher than usual. wondering if the deposits have something to do with this.

Just interesting since this tank setup is only 10 or so months old .
