Not to jack this thread.. mods can separate it out if need be. My brother is having a problem with GHA in his frag tank. The frag tank is plumbed into his main and there is no hair algae in the main. He heard from a guy who runs a small frag store that egg crate will leech a ton of phosphate into the water for a few months when its first put in. This seems to be supported by the persistent hair algae in only the frag tank (where the egg crate is) even though there are very low nitrates and carefully portioned feeding. Has anyone ever heard of this before?

Egg crate is chemically inert and used worldwide regarding this application. Most of the time the reason there is excessive algae growth in and around the egg crate holes is because of flow reduction, but then again PO4 is not the sole reason for hair algae outbreaks and there must be an actual export in order to handle the input.

I was going to say what James said. Different corals need different flows. The lower flows will more than likely have more algae issues.
