It's very possible it died and has been cleaned up. I'm sorry for your losses.

i have 10 or so just floating in the bottom of my tank and they do fine. im sure they would be alot happier if they were attached but every time i move my rock, theres a new on. like these guys said, unless it got sucked up it should show up again, possibly bigger with small ones!
