how long and when will my base rock become live?
how will i know that it is considered live, coraline algae or when things like feather dusters and such move on too live on it? and whould the base rock then be considered vanuatu beacause that is what my live rock is, or what?

I have been told that it van be anything from a couple of months to a year depending on water quality and movement and calcium and so on and so on ! :(

The rock is technically considered "live" when it has bacterial colonization on it. If added to an established tank, this would probably only take a few days...if a new tank several weeks.

As far as growing encrusting algaes and such that will indeed take several months as it is fairly slow in establishing itself compared to nuisance forms.
