Maxi-jet venturi

I just got 2 maxi-jet power heads for water flow
in my marine aquarium, and I am confused about
the venturi air hose thingy.

Do I need this just to push water around?
It runs quiter without it.

Without it, will the pump be less effective?
I didn't notice that much difference.

I suppose it is meant for O2 exchange, but do
I really need that, or will it occur on its own
without the venturi system?

You don't need it at all. Just leave it off. Causes too much salt creep and puts all those ugly bubbles in the tank.
