Hey everyone,

I wanted to start a quarantine tank and had a couple of questions.
I read the article on aquariumadvice.com, and being a newbie--needed
some clarification.

What exactly is a sponge filter and what kind of air pump do I
need? How do I hook it all up?

Thanks,
Steve

the sponge filter are the old fashion filters you used in the 80's for your goldfish bowls

the air pump is pump that pumps just air like to provide bubbles from an air stone.

to hook the 2 together pump---flexible tubing----sponge filter

viola!!!! you have a qt tank filter

You could also use a mini bio wheel for a filter in a QT tank. That way you get some water movement as well as a filter in one...the sponge filter is less expensive though

Can I use a carbon filter pad in my filter box in addition to the sponge filter or will that cause other problems?

You don't want carbon in a QT tank, when a fish is in a QT tank your usually medicating them, and carbon removes the medication from the water.
