What is adequate space between corals?

On a number of web sites that sell corals they give generic advice on keeping, feeding and placing of corals. A common statement is leave adaquate room between other corals. I'm sure it depends on the size and type but does anyone have a standard they go by? Is it 6 inches, is it 4 inches, is it a foot?

I always just kept them far enough from other coral that may sting them. I also found that most of mine set up their own boundries. They would sting the corals that got too close and that set the boundries.
