when it says that a fish is not reef safe

does that mean that it is harmful for the fish or the coral
 
A Fish that is not reef safe will usually eat/nip at the coral. Check the compatability guides to see if the fish you want is compatibile to the fish you already have.
 
It may also not be reef safe because it will eat decorative shrimp, crabs, ect.
