We're going to get some discus this weekend. I've done quite a lot of research and I know everything I believe I need to know. Except, I have a question.

A guy at our local fish store told my wife that an air stone is a must for a discus tank. I have never read that anywhere, and I'm not sure why it would be because I've always read air stones are mainly for looks anyway.

So help me out...is there merit to what he said or is he blowing smoke??

It is not a must. Not sure his reasoning behind this outside of selling you an airstone...

Either am I. I was pretty sure it was well established that air stones don't do much in the way of dissolving oxygen in the water. And if they don't do that...then what possible argument is there?

I read that you need an airstone with discus because you need warm water for them and the higher the temp, the less the oxygen level is.
