Is lava rock really the best biomedia out there? I use Matrix cuz I thought it was good, but people keep telling lava rock is better.

It's really about surface area when it comes down to it. How many nooks and crannies can your bacteria get into and populate. Lava rock is an excellent choice simply because it's full of little holes.

Sera siporax beats it all hands down. Check some of the videos of it on YouTube to see how they tested it against the other top media. Interesting to say the least. It's now the only bio media I run in all my tanks.
