I have a 20H aquarium pretty much fully stocked with a gravel bottom. I have decided to have mostly "nano" fish, and realize that they would do better with a sand substrate. If I change my gravel over to sand, will I lose bacteria such that my nitrogen cycle will be all screwed up, or are there enough bacteria in the filter and on the walls of the tank to keep the cycle going?

There should be enough bacteria in your filter. Just test your water frequently after the change and keep up with your water changes.

No you can still cycle the tank no matter the filter, I was told either put your old gravel in nylons and put them in the tank with the new gravel for a few weeks, or change out the gravel slowly over a month time span
