Does lighting contribute to the growth of diatoms or are silicates/phosphates in tap water the only contributors?

Good question....let opinions start. Silicates are perhaps the most prevalent element on earth. I believe they are more an issue in low par. But overall light and photo period have little impact. That is my belief.

Still thinking :) Mostly I've seen threads focus on removal of silicates. In one thread, a substrate cap of something (dirt?) added on original sand substrate ended months of diatoms.

I don't think of seen a thread experiment.
