filter media

so is there any real difference in the different brands of media or is it just that brand name things are more expensive. im lookin to get some filter floss, pads, ceramic rings, and bio stars, but dont want to spend a ton of money.. so do i have to go with AP things for my XP3 or can i get some cheaper brands?

For filter floss I go to Walmart and get 100% pure polyester batting for pillow stuffing, make sure it doesn't say hypo-allergenic. It cost $5 for a huge roll. In addition to ceramic rings and bio balls, I use plastic pot scrubbers that have no added detergents. I've saved a ton this way.

There is not a difference in the media or rings. I do the same as Zagz and use batting instead of buying expensive filter floss.
