Fishless cycling using fish food

Has anyone done fishless cycling using fish food?

I tried it once it took a long time was a mess at I ended up adding ammonia after all. I would definitely stick with pure ammonia and not bother with it.

I didn't use fish food but I used a piece of raw shrimp. Many people say they have trouble finding the appropriate ammonia to use for the tank to cycle it.
