Hey Viper

Here's my shrimp, They are about 2.5 inches, are you saying that one is 6 inches, cuz I don't think the ones I have will ever get that big. When I bought them they were labeled flower shrimp.

OH, and that sword looks happy and healthy :)

Godzilla shrimp is right. In the first three pics the things looks like a lobster instead of a shrimp. Specially with those things that look like lobster claws going after what looks like a fish. LOL

lovemybarbs, yes I do have an hob filter.. .I did check it.. nothing but some leaves. They don't turn green do they?? hahhahahah Still can't find them, even looking from all directions. Though my 5" chocolate pleco hides from me pretty good in there... He blends just right with this one rock he likes. So maybe the shrimp are doing that too.

Is there a way to have them turn a specific color? Or is it just hit or miss? How long - approx- does it take for them to change colors? Till they are content in the tank?

When i put mine in it was greenish now it has changed to the sort of tan/redish tint ... but he is doin good ... and i would not say that mine is 6" thats a little over but i would say its around 4" cause its a tad bigger than my BN pleco and he isnt quite 4" ...... but yea all my other fish including my rams have all colored up real nice and i think one of my female velvet swords is pregnant.

I have no idea what makes them change color, but I think red is a good sign. My second one was green when I bought it and it turned sort of deep purple and now is a blackish brown. Very strange.

My red one was light brown when I bought it and now it is bright red orange. Weird.

There are a couple of large wood shrimp species that max out at around 4". Vampire shrimp are morphologically very different, usually bluish, and max out at 6"+.

THE BEAST

hehe sorry if the pics look bad ... had to use flash and my camera isnt the best

enjoy

Ray

I like him!

I still can't find mine. ??? Alien fish snatchers again!!!
I looked from 3 sides, (can't get around back) looked from top to bottom and back again. Nothing. Had my arms in there planting crypts - nothing. You think they would have hauled butt from my hands being in there, but I STILL didn't see anything. Do they typically hide for the first few days?
I'm getting bummed out here.

I can almost always find 1, but I go 3 to 4 days without seeing both. I also can't tell them apart. I'm also suprised that I never see them during PWC or replanting, trimming.

You wouldn't think something that big would be that good at hiding. Don't give up hope I bet he's still alive and kicking.

I just bought one of these guys several days ago! I saw him at PetCo and knew I had to have one of these revolting little creatures in my 10g.

Well, mine turned a very dark brown and looks absolutely disgusting (which is a good thing). I'm guessing this is because he has chosen a spot under my driftwood which is close to the same color. Unforuntately, he's kind of hidden under there so I can't see him in his full glory. Any ideas on how to coax him out? Should I block the space he's in with something, or would that stress him?

I really want to see him fan the current and lick his frond thingies!

There's a possibility that he crawled out. A couple sites I read stated that bamboos can occasionally jump ship.

Check around your tank for some floor jerkey! :p

That's probably not the case though.

I did, I did check the floor for jerky, I can see the back, I just can't get around behind it. I looked all over around and in the tank. At different times of day too. Can they change color SO much as to not be seen in there surroundings?

You know I checked my filter too. I got on a chair and took a flashlight to it, but I couldn't see her. I didn't see her until I picked up the filter to rinse it.

Well I have good news.. A few days ago I was doing a water change in the 46 and turned over a domed rock that I have java moss attempting to latch onto. I turned over the rock to check the moss connections and one of the bamboo shrimp was looking at me, then darted off. Have not seen him since.

Update, this morning about 12:45am, I was doing a pre-emptif dose of Prime since I had one of my Angels die today. Just in case she was in there longer than I thought to detox any ammonia..... Well I turned on the lights to make sure I could see the dose I was giving, and I found a red bamboo shrimp on my driftwood! :) Yeeeeeeee!!!! Then I looked to the domed rock and saw another half way out.. It looked at me and climbed back inside. On closer inspection, there are 2 inside the dome and one on the driftwood!!!! I am soooo happy to know they are alive and well.. I hope they get to the point where they will come out during the daytime.
