trying to figure out how big of a heater I need for a 50g tank, there seems to be a lot of mixed opinions. Should I get 2x 100w, 2x 150w, 1x 200w, 1x 250w. Would just 1 heater be enough?

I would purchase one 150W with a lifetime warranty and call it a day.

Some folks recommend running two heaters side by side so if one fails, the other can fill in. There's nothing wrong with this approach except it costs more money.

I keep an undersized backup heater in my cabinet in case I have a problem with my heater and I have to wait a day or two to replace it, but I've never had to use it.

One 150w or 200w whichever you can find a better deal on. Get another as a backup unless you have a spare, a built in thermometer makes life a little easier as well.
