Help canister filter broke

The canister filter on my 72 gallon tank broke
Just bought a new one what is the best way to get it running with losing cycle

My plan is to take some of the old media and put in new filter and plan on adding some bacteria separately will this work

Use the media and sponges from the old one. Watch ammonia and make sure you have prime

I upgraded my canister filter today and used the same method. I also dosed Prime to stay on the safe side. Make sure that you keep the media in tank water when you switch to avoid bacteria from dying. With this, you shouldn't have any issues.
