Is aquarium salt necessary?

I have a few different tanka and I was recently told to add salt. But I'm reading online that its not that great to add to your tank. Any thoughts?

Not necessary would be my way to sum the whole to salt, not to salt debate. It has its uses but for standard freshwater aquarium it's not a requirement to keep you fish healthy.
