I entered the hobby three years ago, and it seems to me as if shrimp (FW) have become EXTREMELY popular I can't say that I knew what I know now three years ago, but when I first started I heard about RCS, and CDS, but never pumpkin oranges, yellow neos, red Rillis, bile pearls I could go on forever. Also I subscribed to TFH, and a couple others about a two years ago, and suddenly the covers story's are "dwarf shrimp the new face of the hobby" I think the reason that these appeal so much is because of three reasons.

1. You don't need a big tank
2. Their really fun to watch (I thought they'd be boring, boy was I wrong)
3. They breed so easily, and sell

Maybe I'm wrong? One last thing, at my aquarium association AAAA, one of the auctioneers always joke about how shrimp sell for way more then a lot of fish. Haha

Ok with the exception of ghost shrimp, those have been around forever, I'm talking about the shrimp that have tanks all to them selves
