I agree 100%, adding floating plants will make gouramis feel much safer at the top of the water column where they usually stay. Any plants like hornwort, anacharis, frogbit, guppy grass, etc. will do nicely.

Plus they will help keep your nitrates down if/when your tank is cycled.
 
ADD FLOATING PLANTS. I don't know if he just likes floating plants or if the diffused light makes him happier, it doesn't matter. I highly suggest you add some cover to the surface. Even if you just have plastic plants. Cut the plastic leaves off and let them float.

Good call. Since they live in very slow or distilled water with plant cover. They can live in ponds with low oxygen because of all the floating plants.
Good idea for cutting the plastic leaves, may not look the greatest, but will keep him healthy and happy.
