I was talking to one of the employees at petco about how my tank has had brown algea since I set it up almost a year ago. She said its probably because im using pool filter sand as a substrate. Is this true? If so, would it be better to switch to a different type of sand?

Fantastic. I was really worried that i was going to have to change out the sand to make it go away.

Where does everyone get pool filter sand? i heard it was pure white but then when i went to a local hardware store, it looked tan/browner than play sand and it was really coarse.

Diatoms are algae, and they can grow more readily in the presence of silica, so what's BS about it?

It's off-white. I bought mine at a local pool supply store for 50 pounds @ 8$.
