safety of non aquarium specific decorations

So I decided how I want my tank decorated, and was curious if anyone knew a link to find out what stones would be safe, and if the dragon and castle incense burners from walmart would be safe?

rocks --> put some vinigar on and if it bubbles it is not safe, then if it is safe boil them throroughly before putting them in.

I would imagine the paint would come off which would be problematic.

Just an idea, could you buy a clear resin and coat anything that isn't aquarium approved?
