Is it a special type of sand manufactured specifically for marine tanks, or just regular sand? Anything made for salt-water is going to have a drastic effect on the pH and hardness levels in a fresh-water system. If it's regular sand, I don't see any kind of problems in using it, as long as you give it a really good rinsing.

I wouldn't use live sand in a freshwater tank. There may be a way to "kill" the stuff living in it, but I'm not sure how to do this. You can use sand that you buy at any hardware store.

visit a place that sells concrete or gravel ... they will probably give you a couple of buckets for free

a local gravel dealer here sells a coarse mortar sand here for $15 a TON ;) ...

on Friday I'm gonna pickup about 60 lbs of #4 sand which is crushed river rock to see how it looks under water ... local concrete dealer is giving it to me free :)
