why use salt in freshwater tank?

I don't use salt as a matter of course. Most fish we keep don't have it in their native waters, and don't need it in their tanks. Clean water is the solution to avoiding disease problems, not adding salt. If fish develop a thicker slime coat with salt in the water, it must be to keep the water in their bodies from being sucked out by the salt in the tank water. I do use it for certain treatments, however.
