With bubbles or without

Which looks better? aquarium with bubbles or without?

without... never see them in nature (waterfalls dont count, neither do aligators, turtles, or sunken logs), shouldn't see them in an aquarium...

If those are live plants, without.

Why, your creating a gas exchange and taking CO2 out of the water. Live plants need CO2 in the water to live :)
 
Don't fishtanks *have* to have air pump/bubbles to work properly?
Nope... none of mine do... Tanks have to have SURFACE AGITATION to allow gas exchange. The bubbles do nothing until they break on the surface, breaking the surface of the water allowing the water to reach equilibrium with the atmosphere. You can achieve this simply by having a filter on the tank that creates some motion on top of the water.
 
Personally I think the bubbles look nicer, but you certainly don't *need* them, and I will only have them if they are quiet!

As long as you have surface agitation ie the surface is moving slightly and not dead calm you'll be fine. You can achieve this by putting the filter output close to the surface.
