Best substrate for new 120?

I'm upgrading to a new 120 gal somewhat soon, sorta. What is the best substrate for reef tanks?

Currently, my 55 has a combination of CC and sand. Should I go to all sand? What kind and where to buy? Thanks!

I think the general consensus here is a DSB. My 120 has 300#s of tropical play sand from Home Depot. About $6 a 50# bag.

I had crushed coral and am glad I got rid of it thanks to the advice on this site.

With sand, no vacuuming every week. Besides it just looks better IMO.

HTH.

Definitely sand. 250-300# is good.

As spinman said, it looks good, and you don't have to clean it.

I would do Google searches for Deep Sand Beds, Barebottom, and Shallow Sand Beds. It is important to become familiar with the benefits and pitfalls of each and then make a decision based on what you want and what animals you want to keep. There is no "best" but rather different methods/applications to get to a similar end result.

I understand the benefits and approaches - good advice. Just had the same question regarding the material itself.

I also heard of a "vinegar test" to make sure the HD sand is acceptable. Can anyone describe that test? Thanks again!

if the sand is araqonite based (which is what you want), then when you put vinegar on the sand, it will fizzle. If it does, use it!
