Caulerpa Questions

I was told that putting Caulerpa algea in the sump will help filter my water. Would it be alright to put into the media area of a bak pak 2 skimmer. I guess I'm concerned about it growing into the tank and becoming a problem.

I wouldn't recommend it.

FWIW, even in a refugium, I wouldn't recommend caulerpa, it is a wonderful nutrient export when pruned regularly, but has a nasty habit of going sexual.

There are a bunch of different species, one of the ones most people recognize is racesmosa or "grape" caulerpa as can be seen here:

Gracilaria species have the same benefits as caulerpa with a much reduced risk of going sexual.
